What to expect on your CITB SSSTS Course


The CITB Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme ( SSSTS) is for you if you’re considering, or already have, supervisory responsibilities in the building & civil engineering sector.


This 2 day course is usually the first step most people take into a supervisory position on a construction site.


Course content

This course highlights potential hazards when working on site and provides practical advice on keeping yourself and your workforce safe.



Day 1 Covers


  • The dangers of working in the construction industry

  • A mock examination to ascertain your level of knowledge and help you understand the examination process

  • Health and safety law, Regulations, ACOP’s and Health & safety guidance

  • Your supervisory responsibilities in controlling site safely

  • Health and safety policies and the Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle

  • Proactive and Reactive monitoring

  • The health & Safety executive and enforcement notices

  • Risk assessments, method statements and the hierarchy of control

  • Permits to work, safety signage

  • Occupational health including asbestos, COSHH & Silica dust

  • Noise including exposure action values

  • Hand and arm vibration syndrome

  • Manual handling

  • Fire safety

  • Construction, design and management regulations


The day is finished off by a risk assessment and method statement exercise.




Day 2 covers

A recap of day 1


  • Safe excavations

  • Temporary works

  • Avoiding dangers from buried services (HSG 47)

  • Avoiding dangers from overhead lines (GS6)

  • Confined spaces including safe systems of work

  • Plant & Vehicle movements

  • Work at height including WAH hierarchy, falling objects, scaffolding, ladder safety

  • Provision & Use of work equipment (PUWER)

  • Electrical Safety

  • Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER)

  • First aid including first aid needs assessment

  • RIDDOR regulations & accident investigation

  • Behavioural safety

  • Stress & Mental Health

  • Drugs & Alcohol

  • Environmental


The day is finished off with a tool box talk exercise

Recap and examination 25 questions, 22 multiple choice and 3 short written answers.

This training activity is carried out Online, you'll need a suitable device e.g. Laptop with a camera or desktop PC with a webcam. Smartphones and tablets are not suitable devices.
