The Cable avoidance tool (CAT) and signal generator (Genny) are some of the most valuable tools a team can have if they are involved in activities that break ground. A key component of any safe system of work involving excavations in the correct hands, this tool can save lives, service disruption and additional costs to the programme. It is vital that those operating plant and machinery are trained and competent to do so, which is a requirement of the provision and use of work equipment regulations 1998.


It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following activities

· Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and your responsibilities as an operator

· Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular equipment to be used and be familiar with other sources of information available including relevant legislation

· Be able to locate the key controls and explain their functions

· Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with the manufacturers and legislative requirements

· Configure the equipment for use

· Define underground services

· Know how to identify the different types of underground services

· Identify risks that underground services can present and how people might be affected by them

· Causes of accidents from underground services

· Conduct all necessary safety checks of the work area

· Carry out detection tasks

· Identify the risks of excavating near underground services on the safe digging practises that should be adopted

· Carry out end of shift shutdown procedures

Maximum novice course ratio: 6 operators 1 Machine 1 trainer (6.1.1)

Maximum number of novice tests per day: 6
