The Green CSCS card

What is a Green CSCS card? 

The Green CSCS card is the entry level card for operatives who want to work on construction sites in the United Kingdom. This card demonstrates that you have received basic health and safety training and understand the dangers of working on construction sites.

The Green CSCS card is specifically for people carrying out labouring duties and general operatives.

If you are a skilled tradesperson you may need a Blue CSCS card. 

​

There are over 2 million CSCS cards in circulation and they are backed by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. you may be refused entry to site if you do not have a current valid CSCS card.

How can I get a Green CSCS card? 

The Green CSCS card can be achieved by completing the following steps.

You'll need to complete a CITB Health, safety and environment test which can be taken at a local pearson centre. 

This is also known in the industry as the CSCS touchscreen test.

It's a multiple choice examination covering various elements of construction based health & safety.

To prepare for the examination there are lots of resources available to you including supporting app for your smartphone or there are books available which can be found using this link.

You'll need to complete an RQF Level 1/SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.

The most popular of these qualifications is the 1 day CITB Health & Safety Awareness course 

This course can be delivered either online or in a classroom based format and covers key elements of construction health & safety.

Alternative level 1 qualifcations from other awarding bodies may also meet the criteria for this element. Please use the below link for a list of accepted level 1 qualifications.

When you have completed step 1 and step 2 you can apply for a Green CSCS card.

What is the price of a Green CSCS card? 

The cost of a Green CSCS card consist of 3 main elements. The cost of the HSE touchscreen test, the price of the one day course and the card fees which are as follows:

What is the minimum age for a CSCS card?

To be eligible for a construction card you need to be at least 16 years of age. You will be shown on the CITB card checker database online and the checker will not show the details of anyone under the age of 16. 

Do I leagally need a CSCS card?

There is no legal requirement for any competency card scheme to be used however, on CDM sites the principal contractor may make it a requirment for the project when producing the construction phase plan. 

I have a learning difference is there help for this to acheive the CSCS card?

If you have dyslexia or any other recognised learning difference assistance can be provided so that you are not adversely affected by the examination process. 

Can training be provided in other languages?

The OperativeHSE touchscreen test is available in English and has eleven voice-over languages other than English. Candidates who are worried that their English will not be sufficient to correctly understand and answer the questions will be able to request their Test in any one of the following languages: Bulgarian; German; Lithuanian; Polish; Portuguese; Punjabi; Romanian; Russian; Czech; Hungarian or Welsh

However the one day course must currently be delivered in English language only.
